In Conversation:
Curiosity, Storytelling, Connection

Small Talk
(Abstract)

In Conversation defines design as both a systematic and emotional process. My interest in the analytical and intuitive allowed me to develop a multimodal methodology that provides space for both to interact holistically.

As a result, my methodology highlights both the input and the output of the design process, where sensory perception and visceral ideas meet analytical methods. I’ve defined a series of interchangeable building blocks that work together synergistically to produce work that promotes connection through storytelling. Establishing parallels with the language system allowed me to define design as a loose enough practice to allow for multiple meanings and combinations, accents, and personal expression while grounded on constraints.

By recontextualizing emotion in design, I expand its role to encompass more than the purely visual. I’ve broken down its multiple facets and infused them into all stages of my processes. Through this, invisible aspects of emotion, narrative, and the essence of wonder remain as impressions throughout my body of work.

Curiosity as Catalyst
Curiosity, wonder, and a sense of bewilderment are all essential components of my creative process. Many of my projects start with an urge to make sense of my experiences. Sometimes juxtaposing, other times finding commonalities, this pursuit for discovery allows me to articulate the harmonies and patterns I perceive in my everyday.

Storytelling as Tool
Everything has a story. Design and storytelling are tightly intertwined; like a good story, design should aim to engage, prompt action, facilitate introspection, or offer a fresh perspective. Narratives can be verbal or non-verbal; symbols can act as vehicles for meaning or tell a story through their form. By working within a system, and building work grounded on constraints, we can set the scene for our audience, one they can explore through their own lens.

Connection as Imprint
Creating work that leaves an impression and is intriguing enough to make someone want to keep it in their pocket or take a double look is the goal. Planning on how the audience will engage with the work, both physically and emotionally, should always be considered. If grounded on empathy, achieved by putting ourselves into our work, we can reach a deeper connection, and prompt subconscious and conscious associations in our audience.
