Sitting Outside: Surfacing Patterns is a set of two books (Part A and Part B) introducing a generative tool to translate mundane observations into tangible designed outputs.
I tend to keep note of concepts I find intriguing, so when I came across the term Patternicity, “the tendency to perceive meaningful patterns and connections among unrelated events,” I was instantly captivated.
Finding inspiration in the process of making intuitive connections between observations, I developed a system for processing collected data through qualitative and quantitative filters, with the purpose of creating collective patterns.
Part A: Focuses on distilling and abstracting the gathered material through color palettes and pattern making, drawn from subjective and factual observations.
Part B: Filters the collected material through a set of parameters (visual perceptions and design principles) using graphical components from Part A, and ultimately merges them to create a generative pattern.
In addition to being backed by research, the final output maintains the essence of the original subject matter while still allowing for personal interpretation.
