Heart of the City

Brand Identity

Heart of the City is an upcoming symposium organized by Flagg Street Studio in partnership with Starlight Square, a transformed parking lot turned civic space in Cambridge, MA. The event gathers designers and thinkers from various fields for discussions on city life, civic spaces, and community building.

As I delved into civic life, infrastructure, and community, I distilled these concepts into guiding ideas for the symposium's identity. These ideas encompass renewal, multifaceted aspects, building blocks, and modularity. Drawing inspiration from historical sources, especially city archives from 1952 to 2000, I was particularly intrigued by urban renewal efforts in the 1960s. The resulting brand identity features a dynamic, modular logo that extends to other assets and deliverables.

I sourced images from Massachusetts Collections Online, a Digital Commonwealth archive. These images are rooted in a context of significant urban renewal in the 1960s, spanning the years 1952 to 2000. My approach was inspired by notions of civic space and infrastructure, drawing on historical references as my initial inspiration.
